Amavasya or New Moon is the significant day in Sanatan Dharma. This is one of the most powerful day, when ancestors are honored. The day is utilized for performing puja, pitru tarpan, pind daan, performing healing practices, releasing past traumas and spiritual cleansing. Amavasya that falls on Monday or Somvar is known as Somvati Amavasya. In the month of June, Somvati Amavasya is being observed today, on June 15, 2026.

Somvati Amavasya 2026: Significance

There are 12 Amavasya observances in a year and falls once a month. There are certain Amavasya’s that are considered highly auspicious and powerful and Somvati Amavasya is one of them. Amavasya that falls on Somvar is known as Somvati Amavasya. Som signifies Monday and Amavasya means New Moon day. For Hindus, this day has great religious and spiritual significance. One must engage in these actions for spiritual merit because devotees think that worshiping ancestors, giving to charity, and engaging in various spiritual activities on this day provide tranquility, prosperity, and spiritual growth in life. Many devotees practice Ganga Snan because the day is seen to be very favorable for spiritual bathing. One must follow the belief that plunging into the Ganga River is rewarding and virtuous.Cow Feeding on Amavasya:Have you every noticed that your mother keeps the first chapati for cow when she prepares the food? this is a daily practice in every household especially in North India and it must be in other regions too but here it is done by everyone because Amavasya is dedicated to honor ancestors so it is believed that all the celestial beings reside in a cow so it is considered highly meritorious and rewards giving, when you feed her. Crow Feeding on Amavasya:Crows are connected to Shani dev and ancestors. One must feed crows while performing rituals associated with ancestors because crows are known as the messenger of ancestors and it is believed that food is delivered to ancestors through them.

Somvati Amavasya 2026: Puja Rituals

Offer water to Surya

Wake up early in the morning and offer Arghya to Lord Surya.

Feed Brahmins

One must invite Brahmin at home and feed them with sattvik food and give them clothes and dakshina after performing Pitru Tarpan.

Offering water to peepal tree

Offer sweet water to the peepal tree, you can prepare that water by adding adding milk and sugar in that.

Light a diya beneath the peepal tree

You should light a diya with desi ghee and keep it under the peepal tree. It is believed that ancestors reside inside the tree so it is meritorious to worship the tree.

Worship Lord Shiva

As we all know that this will be Somvati Amavasya so one must visit the Shiva temple and perform abhishekam to Shivalingam. This will be highly auspicious and meritorious.

Charity/Donation

You should donate food, clothes, fruits and footwears among the needy ones.
