The Haveli taluka in Pune recorded one of the wettest days this monsoon as incessant rain was reported throughout Sunday night and Monday morning, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for rain and thunderstorms in the next three hours for the district.

Until 8.30 am, the automatic weather station at Haveli recorded the highest rainfall in the district at 180 mm, followed by Lohegaon at 129.2 mm, Chinchwad at 82.2 mm, and Shivajinagar at 60 mm of rainfall.

However, the hill stations recorded lower rainfall than the plains, with Lonavala recording just 22 mm of rainfall. Malin village, which disappeared due to a landslide in 2014, recorded just 4 mm of rainfall.

On Sunday, IMD issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in and around Pune and other parts of the state.

Amid the incessant, some residents reported water entering their homes at the Theur village in the Pune district. Personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other departments were pressed into service to evacuate the people.

Most roads in the low-lying areas of Theur were waterlogged, causing problems for office goers in the morning. Some schools in the region have declared a holiday due to the rain.

Due to the heavy rain, the Irrigation Department started releasing water from Panshet, Khadakwasala, and other dams in the district, and warned low-lying areas about it.

According to weather experts, a low-pressure area is active over Maharashtra, causing the rain. The monsoon, which arrived earlier than usual, was characterised by scant rainfall for most of the months in Pune. Thus, July and August reported a large deficit.

The Southwest Monsoon began retreating from Rajasthan on Sunday, with further retreats expected in the next few days.
