Weight loss can often feel like an uphill battle — full of diets that don’t stick, workouts that feel exhausting, and motivation that fades with time. But sometimes, it’s not about grand overhauls; it’s about showing up consistently for the smallest habits.

That’s what Kate Daniel, a woman who lost over 70 kilograms, shared in her Instagram post recently. “The impossible becomes possible when you show up with the same 5 habits, one day at a time… The small, repeatable habits I built are what helped me lose over 70 kg and silence the food noise. And you can too… Nothing flashy. Nothing complicated. Just simple things that stacked up and rewired my brain one day at a time,” she wrote.

Her five foundational habits were straightforward yet powerful: she stopped treating her body “like a bin,” began her days with a high-protein breakfast instead of “saving calories,” moved her body daily through walking or dancing rather than “punishment workouts,” kept one small promise to herself each day to “build self-trust,” and treated meal prep as self-care, which she said “gave me peace, time back, and stopped the chaos.”

Kate summed it up simply, “None of these felt perfect. But they felt possible. And possible is what compounds into freedom. Weight loss surgery gave me the tool, but it wasn’t gastric sleeve surgery alone that got me here.”

How do small, consistent habits rewire the brain and contribute to long-term weight loss success?

Dr Vajalla Shravani, MPT, fitness and pilates expert at Tone30 Pilates, tells indianexpress.com, “Small and consistent habits act like gentle nudges that help the brain form new neural pathways. When someone starts their day with a protein-rich breakfast, it not only balances blood sugar but also signals the body that nourishment is available, reducing cravings later in the day.”

She adds that daily movement, even in simple forms like walking, conditions the brain to associate activity with reward and well-being. Over time, these repeated cues shift behaviour from conscious effort to automatic routine, which is the foundation of lasting weight loss. The real transformation comes not from a single big change but from compounding micro habits that reinforce each other.

How important is mindset and emotional relationship with food when it comes to sustainable weight management?

Mindset is often the missing piece in most weight loss journeys. Honouring fullness means listening to the body’s satiety signals rather than eating until discomfort, Dr Shravani states, which strengthens awareness and control. When meal prep is seen as self-care, it shifts the narrative from restriction to nourishment, making healthy choices feel empowering rather than punishing.

Dr Shravani adds that a positive emotional relationship with food “reduces guilt and binge cycles, which are common barriers to long-term success.”

For individuals who have undergone bariatric or gastric sleeve surgery, what role do habits play in preventing weight regain?

Surgery is a powerful medical intervention, Dr Shravani admits, but it is only the beginning of the journey. Without behavioural and psychological changes, the risk of weight regain remains high. Patients must relearn eating patterns such as chewing slowly, prioritising protein and spacing meals. Equally important is addressing emotional eating, stress triggers and lifestyle habits that may have contributed to weight gain in the first place.

“Psychological support through counselling or support groups helps individuals adapt to their new relationship with food and body image. Long-term success after surgery depends less on the procedure itself and more on consistent reinforcement of healthy routines, mindset shifts and emotional resilience,” notes Dr Shravani.
