Two people, including a woman, have been arrested after a man’s dismembered body was found in the Salem Tabri area on Thursday, the Ludhiana police said.

The deceased was identified as Davinder Kumar, 35, who worked at a printing and graphic designing shop in Mumbai, the police said. He had returned to Ludhiana earlier this week.

The arrested individuals include Kumar’s friend Shamsher Singh alias Shera of Bhora village, and Shera’s wife Kuldeep Kaur.

Sameer Verma, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, said Kumar’s head was found in a plastic drum, while his other body parts were found scattered at different spots in the area.

The incident came to light when a passerby spotted a white plastic drum near the Salem Tabri police station. The police were alerted and inside the drum, they found Kumar’s head. Soon, the other body parts were found nearby.

“According to the preliminary probe, Shera murdered Davinder using a handsaw. He then chopped his body into six pieces and put them in a sack. He and his wife then went to dispose of the pieces. While they dumped the head in a drum, other parts were thrown at nearby spots,” Verma said.

The officer added that Shera committed the crime under the “influence of drugs” on January 6 (Tuesday) following a heated argument with Davinder Kumar over the old dispute over money. Davinder, who worked in digital printing in Mumbai, had arrived in Ludhiana earlier that day to purchase digital printing machines.

ADCP Verma revealed that Shamsher told the police that he and Davinder had consumed ‘chitta’ (heroin) together at his house. “Both were intoxicated and got into an argument over an old monetary dispute. Davinder had borrowed some money from Shamsher and was not returning it. In a fit of rage, he attacked him,” the officer said.

“The CCTV footage shows Shera and his wife carrying a sack to dispose of the body pieces,” he added.

The victim’s family members told police that after arriving from Mumbai on Tuesday, he left home within 15 minutes but never returned. The Salem Tabri police registered a First Information Report (FIR) for murder and other offences against Shera, his wife and others following a statement by the deceased’s wife.
