US Vice President JD Vance has said he hopes his wife, Usha Vance — who was raised Hindu — will one day be “moved” by the Catholic Church and embrace Christianity, though he stressed that their difference in faith has never been a source of conflict.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Mississippi on Wednesday, Vance said, “Now, most Sundays, Usha will come with me to church. Do I hope, eventually, that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved by in church? Yeah, I honestly do wish that because I believe in the Christian gospel and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way.”

He added that while his faith is important to him, Usha’s beliefs don’t pose any problem in their marriage. “If she doesn’t [convert], then God says everybody has free will — and so that doesn’t cause a problem for me. That’s something you work out with your friends, your family, with the person that you love,” he said.

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, recalled that when he met his wife, he considered himself an agnostic or atheist. Their children, however, are being raised in the Christian faith and attend a Christian school.

Making religion a central theme in his remarks, the Republican leader said, “I make no apologies for thinking that Christian values are an important foundation of this country. Anybody who’s telling you their view is neutral likely has an agenda to sell you. And I’m at least honest about the fact that I think the Christian foundation of this country is a good thing.”

Turning Point USA (TPUSA) was founded in 2012 in suburban Chicago by 18-year-old Charlie Kirk with a mission to “identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote the principles of fiscal responsibility, free markets, and limited government.”

However, Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on September 10 at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah — during the first stop of his “American Comeback Tour.”

According to investigators, a single gunshot rang out as Kirk addressed a crowd of about 3,000 people. Witnesses said his head snapped back before he collapsed on stage. Despite the presence of a small police unit and his private security detail, there had been no security screening for attendees.

Authorities identified the shooter as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who allegedly fired from a building about 140 yards away.
