THE DELHI High Court on Monday directed the Centre — through its Ministry of External Affairs — to appoint a liaison officer for establishing contact with Ukrainian authorities while urging the Consular General to take steps for “repatriation” of a Gujarat man, Sahil Majothi, who has claimed that he was drafted to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war from the Russian side.

The court has urged the Centre to attempt that contact is established between Sahil and his mother, a cancer patient, who has moved a petition before the Delhi High Court, seeking its intervention and directions.

Sahil purportedly surrendered to the Ukrainian authorities, according to a video clip released by the Ukrainian authorities earlier in October.

Hasinaben Majothi, Sahil’s mother, has moved Delhi HC, seeking the court’s direction to the authorities to take steps to bring back her son who went to Russia. According to Hasinaben, Sahil was “framed in a false case with the intent to extort money from the Petitioner for his release” in Russia.

Hasinaben is seeking a direction to authorities to communicate to Hasinaben, the present status of Sahil’s detention and “initiate consular assistance as per the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.”
