Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema Monday said that directions have been issued to the district administration regarding the estimated expenses for renovating and maintaining Sewa Singh Thikriwala’s haveli in Thikriwala village, Barnala.

The finance minister was speaking at a gathering in Barnala organised to mark the 92nd death anniversary of Sewa Singh Thikriwala ji.

January 20 marks the death anniversary of Sewa Singh Thikriwala, who spearheaded the Praja Mandal or self-rule movement against the rulers of Punjab’s erstwhile princely states. He died in jail while was on a hunger strike in 1935. Since then, a memorial has been held annually in his native village from January 18 to January 20.

Cheema added that the work on the Nursing College in Thikriwala village will be expedited. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann had in 2023 announced the construction of the nursing college.

The leaders Monday laid the foundation stone for constructing 12.99 km roads in Thikriwala village at Rs 959.49 lakh.

On this occasion, Lok Sabha MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said that in the past 4 years alone, Barnala has received projects worth Rs 300 crore from the Irrigation Department.

Cabinet Minister Aman Arora said that the residents of Thikriwala are the heirs of that land where Sewa Singh Thikriwala started the war for the welfare of the people.
