The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against former Punjab Director General of Police Mohammad Mustafa, his wife and former Punjab minister Razia Sultana, their daughter, and daughter-in-law in connection with the death of Mustafa’s son, Aqil Akhter, who died under suspicious circumstances in Panchkula last month.

Officials said that the CBI took over the probe days after the Haryana government recommended a central investigation into the case.
A CBI spokesperson said that an FIR had been lodged on Thursday against the four persons under Sections 103(1) and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the CBI, the FIR was registered on allegations surrounding the unnatural death of Aqil Akhter, son of Mohammad Mustafa and Razia Sultana, who was residing in Panchkula. Aqil was found dead on October 16.

“The FIR was registered on allegations that there was simmering discontent between the deceased and his family,” the spokesperson said, adding that the investigation would be carried out by a specialized team.

The case stems from a complaint filed at the Mansa Devi Complex police station in Panchkula on October 20, which was later referred to the CBI by the Haryana government for a deeper probe. Earlier, the Haryana Police had booked Mustafa, Sultana, their daughter, and daughter-in-law for murder and criminal conspiracy.

“Aqil had publicly shared a video on social media on August 27, claiming that he had discovered an illicit relationship between his father and his own wife. In the same video, Aqil alleged that his entire family, including his mother and sister, were part of a conspiracy to either kill him or implicate him falsely,” the spokesperson alleged.

After registering an FIR, the CBI has started collecting digital and forensic evidence and will question those named in the FIR. The agency is also examining the circumstances leading up to Aqil’s death, including the family’s internal disputes mentioned in the complaint.
