Led by Bruno Fernandes’s goal, Manchester United returned to winning ways with a morale-boosting 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League match at home on Saturday night. The victory-hungry side, United, also saw themselves climb to the top half of the leaderboard as they are placed ninth in the points table with seven points from five matches.

After Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez was shown a red card in just the fifth minute, Fernandes pounced on the opportunity, scoring a goal in the 14th minute. Later on, Casemiro’s header doubled the lead for the home team before he was sent out with a red card as well. United boss was all-praise for his forward and compatriot Fernandes.

“He deserves all the praise,” said Amorim after the win.

“The most important thing is the influence he has on the squad. Sometimes he’s not in the best position to be the main man in every game, but the point of the captain is to be the best he can be in every situation to help the team to be better. He’s doing that. I think he can play better – but everyone can play better in our team,” he added.

United are yet to win successive Premier League games under Amorim, and in a desperate bid to change this embarrassing record, his side will travel to Brentford next Saturday.

But on Sunday, it was all Fernandes as Amorim said the Portuguese should be in the history of the club after scoring his 100th goal for United.

“That guy deserves to be in the history of our club, not just for what he does but for what his team conquers,” he was quoted as saying by BBC Sports.

This was United’s second win of the season after beating Burnley 3-2 in extra time. They played a 1-1 draw with Fulham, lost 1-0 to Arsenal and 3-0 to arch-rivals Manchester City.

Amorim advocated for building the momentum after this huge win over the FIFA Club World Cup champion.

“Now it’s time to create a bit of momentum,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. “We started the game really well, really aggressively.”

“I cannot remember a very good play from us, but we pushed our opponent in how aggressive we were in the first and second balls. We cannot have someone sent off near half-time in Casemiro, we like to complicate all our games! But it was a good game,” said Amorim.

“I felt the urgency, especially in the beginning of the game. The sending off helped us. If you remember the first half, we had so many opportunities three against one, three against two. We have to be more clinical to finish the game sooner. With the sending off of Casemiro, you never know what is going to happen so we have to take the chance to kill the game,” he added.
