The Assam cabinet has approved the inclusion of the state’s history and geography as compulsory subjects for students of classes 6, 7, and 8, in line with the recommendations of the Justice (Retd.) Biplab Kumar Sharma committee. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the decision on his X account. This curriculum will be mandatory, and students will have to pass a 50-mark exam in each subject.

“The Cabinet has decided that Assam history and geography will become mandatory subjects in Classes 6, 7, and 8 across all elementary and upper primary schools in the state. The subjects will be introduced uniformly across the state for “shaping young minds with the knowledge of Assam,” read the X update of Sarma.

In today’s #AssamCabinet meeting, we resolved to

✅Set up Centre of Excellence in Aerospace & Defence etc sectors
✅Approve the Assam Logistics & Warehousing Policy

The approval comes a week after the education department informed the Assembly that more than 1,400 interior schools still lack basic drinking water and toilet facilities. At the same time, nearly 28,000 teaching posts remain vacant across state-run schools. In addition, the Cabinet sanctioned Rs 243.66 crore for establishing a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at Assam Engineering College in Guwahati. Focused on Aerospace and Defence, Automotive, and Electric Vehicles, the CoE aims to deliver industry-relevant skills, support upskilling, and strengthen the startup and MSME ecosystem.

The government also approved setting up a new Sainik School in Karbi Anglong, with an estimated investment of Rs 335 crore. This will be the second Military School at Longbokhu in Karbi Anglong district. The construction of the school will be carried out with funds approved by the state and central governments, as mentioned by Ranoj Pegu, who is one of the cabinet ministers for Higher Education, School Education, and Tribal Affairs.

Assam Education Minister informed the Assembly that 12,382 teaching posts are currently vacant in Middle English (ME) schools, while 8,251 regular teacher positions remain unfilled in lower primary (LP) schools. The Assembly also passed four education-related amendment bills concerning fee regulation, provincialisation of teachers, reorganisation of educational institutions, and teacher recruitment and transfer.

In addition, two more bills—the Azim Premji University Bill, 2025, and the North Eastern Regional Institute of Management (NERIM) University Bill, 2025—moved by Pegu, were approved. Altogether, six education-related bills were cleared on November 29, despite an opposition walkout.
