UP horror: Wife, in-laws spike man’s drink with ‘Sulphas’ at birthday party; he dies

AGRA: A 28-year-old man who died under suspicious circumstances at his in-laws’ residence last year was murdered by poisoning, police said after a forensic breakthrough. The revelation came following a viscera examination report that confirmed the presence of aluminium phosphide (commonly known as Sulphas) in his system. The deceased, identified as Yatendra Pal Singh, a resident of Trans Yamuna’s Gulab Nagar, had visited his in-laws’ house on November 14 to attend his wife’s birthday celebration.During the gathering, he allegedly consumed alcohol laced with poison and soon fell critically ill. He later died, prompting initial suspicion but no clear cause. As the postmortem report failed to ascertain the exact cause of death, samples were preserved and sent for viscera analysis. The lab findings established poisoning as the cause, leading to a fresh round of investigation.Acting on a complaint filed by the victim’s mother, Manju Rani, under court directions, police registered a case against the wife Jyoti, father-in-law Mahendra Singh Sengar, mother-in-law Shivani, and brother-in-law Rishabh.During interrogation, investigators uncovered that the accused had allegedly mixed Sulphas in the victim’s drink with the intent to kill him. Following the findings, police arrested Jyoti and her father Mahendra Singh Sengar.Deputy commissioner of police (City), Syed Ali Abbas, said the two accused were produced in court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody under relevant setion of BNS.The investigation was carried out by Kamla Nagar police, while further legal proceedings in the case are underway. Section 103(1) of the BNS has been invoked in the case.Police said efforts are on to determine the exact motive behind the crime and the role of other named accused in the case.
