A 24-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death following an altercation at a birthday party in Sector 56 on Saturday late night.

The victim, 24-year-old Vishal, and the accused, Shubham, both lived in the same sector.

Vishal, employed with a private company, is survived by his wife and a young child.

According to the police, the incident took place around 1.30 am outside the house of complainant Gurmeet Kumar, whose son had invited the two to a birthday gathering.

Gurmeet has stated to the police that Vishal and Shubham, both allegedly drunk, got into a heated argument as they stepped out of the house. Despite efforts by family members to pacify them, the confrontation grew more aggressive, with the two hurling abuse and pushing each other.

The police said that in the middle of the fight, Shubham went to his residence nearby, fetched a knife and returned to attack Vishal. He allegedly stabbed him several times in the abdomen and other parts of the body before fleeing.

Neighbours and family members rushed a critically injured Vishal to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where doctors declared him brought dead. The body has been kept in the mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Ram Dayal, SHO, Sector 39 police station, reached the scene soon after the incident, conducted an inspection and called in the forensic team. The police later tracked down Shubham and arrested him within hours. The weapon used in the crime was also recovered.

Premiminary investigation has indicated that the two had no past dispute and the fight appears to have stemmed from excessive drinking, said a police official.
