NEW DELHI: The wait for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s historic India debut will continue after newly-appointed captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed that the 15-year-old batting sensation was not included in the playing XI for the opening T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday.Sooryavanshi had been widely tipped to make his maiden international appearance after a stunning rise through the ranks. Had he featured, the teenager would have become the youngest player ever to represent India in men’s international cricket, eclipsing Sachin Tendulkar‘s 37-year-old record. At the toss, however, Iyer ended the speculation before explaining that the decision was driven by team balance rather than the youngster’s readiness.“Going to field first. It’s a new surface for us, first time in Belfast. Considering the conditions, the environment and the wicket, want to field first. Need to get accustomed to the conditions as quickly as possible. We’re going to take one match at a time. Always keep saying that you don’t have to complicate things,” Iyer said. When asked whether Sooryavanshi would make his debut, the skipper replied: “Unfortunately, no.”He then reassured fans that the teenager remains firmly in India’s plans.“He’ll (Sooryavanshi) get his opportunity when the time comes. For now we’re going with three genuine seamers, one all-rounder,” Iyer added.

Teen prodigy remains on the brink of history

Although he missed out on his first cap, Sooryavanshi remains on the verge of rewriting Indian cricket history. Whenever he makes his international debut, the left-hander will become India’s youngest-ever men’s international cricketer, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 205 days old when he debuted against Pakistan in 1989.The Bihar youngster earned his maiden senior call-up after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals, where he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 776 runs in 16 innings at a breathtaking strike rate of 237.30. He also smashed a record 72 sixes, the most by any batter in a single IPL season. The teenager carried that form into the India A tri-series in Sri Lanka, blasting 94 off just 29 balls in the final against Sri Lanka A, an innings that included the fastest fifty in List A cricket history as he reached the milestone in just 11 deliveries.

Dream deferred, not denied

Speaking after receiving his maiden India call-up, Sooryavanshi had described wearing the India jersey as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.“Words cannot explain it. The reason I picked up the bat from day one and went to the ground for practice: that dream is fulfilled now. The biggest step in that journey was completed today,” he had said in a BCCI video.“I felt like I was dreaming when I saw that T-shirt. I couldn’t stop smiling. Sometimes things happen that you never imagined could happen.”While Indian fans will have to wait a little longer to see the teenage sensation on the international stage, Iyer’s comments made it clear that the omission is only temporary.
