Under 19 World Cup: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can't play for India's men's team right now – Here's why
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (X-Cricbuzz)

The dust is still settling at Harare Sports Club, but Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s breathtaking display in the Under-19 World Cup final against England continues to resonate across the cricketing world. His 175 off just 80 balls was more than an innings—it was a record-breaking blitz. With 15 towering sixes and a strike rate that seemed to mock the intensity of a final, the 14-year-old prodigy from Bihar has left fans asking one burning question: If he can dismantle England’s top U19 players and smash IPL centuries, why isn’t he part of the senior Indian team? The answer lies with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The key obstacle for Sooryavanshi is the ICC’s Minimum Age Policy. Introduced in 2020 to protect the mental and physical well-being of young athletes, the rule mandates that players must be at least 15 to feature in international cricket.

Born on 27 March 2011, Vaibhav was still 14 during his World Cup triumph in February 2026. Ironically, while he is too young for the senior squad, he has also outgrown the U19 team. The BCCI enforces a strict “One-Tournament” rule for the U19 World Cup, designed to prevent age-group specialists and ensure a constant influx of fresh talent. Having already dominated the 2026 edition and won the Player of the Tournament award, Vaibhav is ineligible for the 2028 or 2030 editions, even though he would still be under 19.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Records

The excitement around the young opener is easy to understand, given the string of records he has broken in the past year:

  • U19 World Cup Final High: 175 off 80 balls against England, the highest score in a U19 final.
  • World Cup Sixes Record: 30 sixes in the 2026 edition, surpassing Dewald Brevis’ previous mark.
  • Global List-A Record: Youngest in history to score a List-A century at 14 years and 272 days.
  • Fastest 150 in History: 150 off 59 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, breaking AB de Villiers’ record.
  • IPL Century Milestone: Youngest IPL centurion at 14 years, 32 days, with a 35-ball ton for Rajasthan Royals.
  • India A Pioneer: First player to score a T20 century for India A, with a 32-ball hundred against UAE.
  • Youth ODI Speed: Fastest Youth ODI century with a 52-ball ton against England U19.
  • Youth Test Record: Fastest Youth Test century by an Indian (58 balls), second fastest in world history.
  • Domestic T20 Record: Youngest centurion in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with an unbeaten 108.
  • Boundary Landmark: First player to hit 100 career sixes in Youth ODIs.

For now, the “Sooryavanshi Storm” is confined to domestic cricket and franchise tournaments. But the clock is ticking. As soon as he turns 15 later in 2026, it is only a matter of time before the blue jersey bearing his name makes its debut at the highest level.
