The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil) has sought zero duty access to the European Union (EU) for textile products.

The cotton textiles sector, which provides livelihoods to lakhs of rural artisans, currently exports over $1.3 billion annually to the European Union. However, tariff barriers in the EU market, place Indian cotton-based products at a competitive disadvantage compared to countries.

The Texprocil has consistently advocated zero-duty access in the ongoing India–EU negotiations. As the India–EU Free Trade Agreement moves closer to conclusion, it has reiterated its demand for a comprehensive zero-duty market access for all cotton textiles products.

Such a deal will help restore competitiveness, strengthen farmer-linked value chains, support MSME exporters, promote sustainable, value-added exports, and significantly enhance India’s footprint in the EU market from the current exports of $1.3 billion, the Texprocil said in a press release on Saturday.

At the recent Heimtextil Show held in Frankfurt, Germany, the world’s largest global platform for the home textile sector, Indian exporters were optimistic of the ensuing deal with the EU, the release added.
