Tax audit deadline for AY 2025-26 extended! Big relief for income taxpayers as CBDT extends last date to file audit report; check new due date

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Thursday extended the deadline for furnishing the audit reports under the Income-tax Act, 1961, for the Financial Year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) to October 31, 2025, from the usual date of September 30.“The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend the specified date for filing various audit reports for the Previous Year 2024–25 (Assessment Year 2025–26), from 30th September 2025 to 31st October 2025, for assessees referred to in clause (a) of Explanation 2 to sub-section (1) of section 139 of the Act,” it said in a post on X.The Board further said that it considered multiple representations from professional associations, including Chartered Accountant bodies, who cited challenges in completing tax audits on time. Floods and other natural calamities in several regions have disrupted normal business and professional activities, making compliance difficult, it also said in the statement announcing the extension. While noting these hardships, the CBDT clarified that the Income-tax e-filing portal remains “stable and fully functional,” pointing out that by the close of September 24, 4.02 lakh Tax Audit Reports had been uploaded, with more than 60,000 submissions on 24 September alone. Over 7.57 crore income-tax returns have been filed as of 23 September.A formal notification giving effect to the new deadline will be issued separately.
