Tarsem Jassar highlights Sikh history; says Diwali ‘belongs to everyone equally, beyond religion’ - Exclusive

From putting on new clothes to lighting diyas, bringing gifts for friends and family, and indulging in delicious delicacies, the festive spirit of Diwali is too infectious to miss. And behind all this celebration lies a spiritual connection, one that is deeply rooted in both the Hindu religion and Sikh history. Highlighting the same, Punjabi singer-actor Tarsem Jassar, in his exclusive conversation with us, mentioned that the festival of Diwali goes beyond any religion and boundary, as to him, “Diwali is not just a festival — it’s a reminder of faith, freedom, and compassion.”

Tarsem Jassar speaks about his spiritual connection with Diwali

“In Sikh history, it’s celebrated as Bandi Chhor Diwas, marking the day our Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, was released from Gwalior Fort along with 52 kings. It symbolizes courage and integrity. Also, it’s the day Bhagwan Ram returned from exile — a moment of light conquering over darkness,” said the actor.

He added, “To me, Diwali represents unity — a celebration that belongs to everyone equally, beyond religion or boundaries.”As the ‘Rab Da Radio’ actor continued, he revealed how the festival of lights is celebrated in his house. “Diwali at my home is peaceful and family-oriented. The day begins with paath, followed by lighting diyas together in the evening — my mother still insists one diya must shine in every corner of the house,” he said before adding, “No matter how hectic life gets, Diwali brings a quiet pause — a moment to sit together, talk, and be thankful for everything we have.”

Tarsem Jassar shares his core Diwali memory from childhood

“As a child, Diwali was pure excitement — cleaning the house, helping sisters with decorations, and running around with friends. The whole street would glow golden by night. The smell of crackers and the taste of freshly made sweets — those simple memories still define Diwali for me,” said the ‘Mastaney’ star. And speaking of freshly made sweets, Tarsem Jassar revealed he has a sweet tooth. “Diwali is a full cheat day. I’m a big fan of homemade food and Jalebis— my mother’s pinnis, besan ladoos are unbeatable. Food made at home and shared with love always feels special,” he quoted.

The light of Tarsem Jassar’s life

“My family is the light of my life,” said the actor before adding, “they keep me grounded and remind me of what truly matters.” He continued, “My fans, too, are a big part of that light. Tarsem Jassar shares special Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas wishes

The ‘Galwakdi’ actor concluded our conversation by sharing special greetings for everyone on the festive occasion, “I wish everyone a very Happy Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas!
