Three days after his mother and deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar won the Baramati assembly constituency byelection, Jay Pawar on Thursday said it had been the wish of Baramati voters to see their elected representative to become chief minister of the state so Sunetra Pawar should contest the 2029 Baramati assembly election to fulfill the wish of voters.
“Sunetra Pawar has stepped into the shoes of Ajit Pawar. I feel that she herself should become the Chief Minister in 2029,” said Jay Pawar, younger son of Sunetra and Ajit Pawar, speaking at the Janta Darbar (public grievance meeting) that he held, in Baramati for the first time after his father Ajit Pawar, died in a plane accident.
He said, “I recently held discussions with my close associates. It was the collective wish of all the people of Baramati to see my father Ajit Pawar become the Chief Minister at least once. Now, my mother Sunetra too is working extremely hard. We all feel that she should contest the election in 2029 and that she is the one who should assume the office of Chief Minister.”
Two weeks ago, NCP(SP) executive president and Baramati MP Supriya Sule said she would be happy to see her sister in law Sunetra Pawar as CM of the state.
During the Baramati assembly byelection, NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar had stated that there was a possibility of contest within members of Pawar family for 2029 assembly election after his cousin Jay Pawar had stated that the voters of Baramati wanted him to contest assembly election in future. However, Sule later said that she will not allow political contests in elections within members of the Pawar family.
He said that it was an emotional moment for him to hold Janta Darbar and hear the praise of his father directly from the public. “I, like my father, want to work for the public of Baramati,” said Jay.
On possible candidature for the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by Sunetra Pawar, he said there has been no decision yet and whenever it is taken by the party chief Sunetra Pawar, it will be made public.

Jay said that he and his mother are keeping close control over things in Baramati assembly constituency. “The deputy chief minister has conveyed to the administration and police to keep control of the situation in the assembly constituency as it existed during the time of Ajit Pawar as legislator of the assembly constituency,” he said.
Jay Pawar said the administration has been directed to ensure there is no shortage of water for residents of Baramati and efforts are being made to push for implementation of water supply projects.
