Pro-Khalistan group issues bomb threat ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s Haryana visit

CHANDIGARH: Security agencies have been placed on high alert after an email, purportedly sent by a pro-Khalistan group, threatened to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Haryana’s Jind on Friday.The email also claimed that bomb blasts would be carried out at schools, railway stations and other locations in Chandigarh and Jalandhar on July 17, when the prime minister is scheduled to visit Punjab and Haryana, news agency PTI reported. The email also threatened Union minister of state for railways Ravneet Singh Bittu.The message was allegedly sent on behalf of a group calling itself the “Khalistan National Army”, which has issued similar threats in recent months, including one targeting the RSS headquarters in Nagpur.The email claimed that improvised explosive device (IED) blasts would be carried out at schools, the Mohali mayor’s office, and railway stations in Jalandhar and Chandigarh.According to officials, the email was sent from the ID “kengakira@gmail.com“.It claimed that blasts would occur at schools at 1:11pm and at the Mohali mayor’s office at 3:11pm on July 17.Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana on July 17 to inaugurate and announce several development projects. He is also set to address a public rally in Jind, Haryana.Following the threat, police and other security agencies launched an investigation and intensified security arrangements at sensitive locations.Officials said authorities are verifying the authenticity of the email and assessing the credibility of the threat.(With agency inputs)
