Peace rally in Pakistan rocked by suicide blast; 14 killed, 20 injured
The blast occurred near Kabal Chowk, where residents had assembled for the ‘Olasi Pasoon’ peace gathering

At least 14 people were killed and 20 others injured on Sunday when a suicide bomber struck outside the Kabal Police Station in Pakistan’s Swat district during a large public rally against terrorism, police officials said. The attacker detonated explosives after officers attempted to stop and search him at the entrance of the police station, triggering panic among hundreds of demonstrators gathered nearby. The blast occurred near Kabal Chowk, where residents had assembled for the “Olasi Pasoon” peace gathering to demand an end to the recent resurgence of militant violence in the Swat Valley.

PTM condemns attack on peace gathering

Soon after the bombing, PTM Momand said its social media team was launching a campaign condemning the attack on what it described as a peaceful gathering. “PTM socialMediaTeam is launching a campaign to condemn the horrific bomb blast that targeted Apeaceful gathering of ‘Olasi Pasoon’ in Swat. People who assembled to demand peace wr met with violence instead. Initial reports indicate at least seven pple killed #StopStateTerrorismInSwat,” the group posted on X.

Death toll rises as investigation begins

Swat police spokesperson Nasir Iqbal Karimi confirmed that 14 people had died in the explosion. Earlier, Swat Deputy Inspector General of Police Fida Hussain said seven people, including four police officers, had been killed and 20 injured, but the death toll was later revised upward.According to Swat District Police Officer Umar Khan, the bomber blew himself up after police personnel tried to search him at the station gate. He said security forces had cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to gather further evidence.

Attack shakes peace rally

The attack took place as the final speaker was addressing the gathering, causing widespread panic among those attending the rally. Rescue teams, police and local authorities rushed to the scene, and the injured were taken to Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital for treatment. No group had claimed responsibility for the bombing by Sunday evening. Before the explosion, speakers at the rally had condemned the rise in militant activity and demanded that the government ensure lasting peace in the region. They said their movement had a single agenda, the restoration of peace and the elimination of terrorism from Swat. The speakers argued that maintaining law and order and eradicating terrorism were the responsibility of the state, and warned that continued insecurity could fuel broader public unrest. They also criticised the authorities for allegedly taking action against peaceful citizens while militants continued to operate in the mountainous areas of Swat.“Our children deserve education, and our families deserve to live in peace,” one speaker told the crowd.“We have witnessed years of bloodshed. Our mothers, sisters, and daughters have suffered immensely, and we do not want another generation of widows and orphans.”

Rising militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The bombing came amid a sharp increase in militant violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Earlier on Sunday, an improvised explosive device blast near the Peshawar-Islamabad motorway toll plaza injured two police officers in Peshawar. On 30 July, nine police officers were killed in an attack on a police checkpost in Hangu.According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, excluding the merged districts, recorded 154 terrorism-related deaths in July, compared with 75 in June, an increase of 105 per cent.

Pakistani leaders condemn bombing

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow over the loss of life and called for a comprehensive investigation into the bombing. He directed the relevant authorities to provide the best medical facilities to those injured. “Terrorists will never succeed in their nefarious efforts to harm peace, national unity, and the writ of the state,” he said, adding that the sacrifices of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police were a “source of pride for the entire nation”.Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor Faisal Karim Kundi also condemned the attack, saying, “Terrorists cannot demoralise the nation with cowardly attacks.” Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s chief minister Sohail Afridi sought a report from the provincial Inspector General of Police and offered condolences to the families of the victims. “The elements hostile to peace will never be allowed to succeed in their nefarious intentions,” he said.
