NEW DELHI: Opposition parties are preparing to submit fresh notices in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to move a motion for the removal of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar soon, sources said, making this their third attempt to move a motion to remove him. The notices, being drafted and vetted by experts, are expected to be submitted sometime next week, sources said.A notice moved by 73 opposition MPs from Rajya Sabha on April 24 seeking Kumar’s removal is already pending in the upper House of Parliament. On Wednesday, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that opposition MPs of both Houses will submit new notices to the LS Speaker and RS chairperson seeking the CEC’s removal, if govt decides to hold a special session of Parliament as monsoon session has not been prorogued.

Sources Thursday said the notice against Kumar, proposed to be moved in LS and RS, will include issues raised in a recent report by Indian Express. “TMC is very happy to play the role of squirrel in the garden. Opposition has to act unitedly and swiftly,” party MP Derek O’Brien said, asserting the importance of opposition unity at this juncture.On April 7, LS speaker and RS chairperson had rejected the opposition’s first notice, which was signed by 130 LS members and 63 RS members, for CEC’s removal for alleged partisanship and arbitrariness in the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
