Naomi Campbell wore this Alexander McQueen look in 2009; now the complete outfit could sell for $1 million

A piece of fashion history from Alexander McQueen’s most influential era is heading towards the auction block, carrying with it the provenance of one of the world’s most recognisable supermodels. The complete McQueen ensemble comes from Naomi Campbell’s archive and includes a woven silk outfit paired with the designer’s distinctive Armadillo shoes. First presented during McQueen’s 2009 “Plato’s Atlantis” collection, the look is now estimated at between $600,000 and $1 million. Its value lies not simply in the clothes themselves, but in their connection to McQueen’s final runway collection and Campbell’s place in fashion history.

The outfit comes from Naomi Campbell’s personal archive

The ensemble being offered for sale comes directly from Naomi Campbell’s archive, giving it an unusually strong connection to the history of Alexander McQueen. Vanity Fair reports that the complete look consists of a woven silk ensemble and matching Armadillo shoes. The collection was presented in 2009 as part of McQueen’s spring-summer 2010 “Plato’s Atlantis” show, the designer’s final runway collection before his death in 2010. Rather than being a single garment detached from its original context, the auction lot preserves the outfit as a complete look, including the footwear that became one of McQueen’s most recognisable designs.

McQueen’s Armadillo shoes became fashion history

The Armadillo shoes helped define the otherworldly visual language of “Plato’s Atlantis”. Their exaggerated, sculptural shape made them immediately recognisable and later helped turn the collection into one of McQueen’s most remembered works. Vanity Fair notes that the shoes were made particularly famous by Lady Gaga, who incorporated McQueen’s designs into her own visual identity. The 2009 collection explored a futuristic world inspired by ideas of evolution and humanity’s relationship with nature. Today, the shoes are not simply accessories accompanying the dress: together with the silk ensemble, they form a complete piece of McQueen’s creative vision.

The complete look could fetch up to $1 million

The McQueen ensemble is one of the standout pieces in Fair Warning’s upcoming “Impossible Couture Collection”, curated by Peter Brant Jr. The auction is scheduled to take place on September 17, with the collection being shown during New York Fashion Week beforehand. Galerie Magazine reports that the complete McQueen lot is estimated to sell for $600,000 to $1 million. That valuation reflects the growing market for historically important vintage couture, particularly pieces with significant designer provenance and connections to famous wearers. In this case, the combination of McQueen’s final runway collection and Campbell’s archive makes the ensemble especially compelling to collectors.

The auction is treating couture more like fine art

The sale is part of an effort by Fair Warning founders Loïc Gouzer and curator Peter Brant Jr. to elevate vintage couture within the auction world. The collection includes 23 lots spanning influential designers, with pieces by John Galliano, Yves Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, Elsa Schiaparelli, Azzedine Alaïa and Martin Margiela. The McQueen ensemble stands apart because of its complete form and historical significance. Brant describes the 2009 look as a synthesis of ideas McQueen had developed throughout his career. The collection will also be presented in a runway exhibition, allowing viewers to experience garments in motion rather than only as static auction objects.
