Magic Johnson has endured the hardest part of his life. Decades after that life-altering diagnosis, his HIV diagnosis is still one of the major parts of his story. Speaking recently, Johnson once again opened a window into that journey, reminding people how far both he and public understanding of HIV have come.Long before becoming a global businessman and advocate, Johnson built a legacy with the Los Angeles Lakers. Five championships, countless accolades, and a style that changed basketball. Yet, he was forced into early retirement. Of course, Johnson has made a glorious basketball resume, but it is fair to assume that if he had played a few more years, his legacy would have been even greater.

Magic Johnson addresses HIV in a recent conference

On Thursday, Johnson stood in front of more than 1,000 employees at ViiV Healthcare in Atlanta and spoke with the same clarity that once guided the Lakers’ offense. His message blended leadership, business lessons, and something far more personal.“This morning I had the privilege of speaking with over 1,000 employees and sales team members of ViiV Healthcare in Atlanta, GA about leadership, teamwork, how I built my business, and my journey living with HIV,” Johnson wrote on Instagram, adding, “The employees were so enthusiastic, engaging and received my message well! Thank you to ViiV Healthcare VP, Head of Sales US Kristin Fink for having me!”Since retiring, Johnson has built an empire through Magic Johnson Enterprises and invested in teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Commanders. Still, he continues to use his platform to educate and inspire.

HIV forced Magic Johnson’s early retirement from the NBA

The turning point came on November 7, 1991. At just 32, Johnson delivered news that surprised the sports world.“Because of the HIV virus that I have obtained, I will have to retire from the Lakers, today,”There was a wave of stigma that surrounded HIV at the time. Even Johnson admitted his first thought was grim. “At the very first, when he first announced it to me, I thought: ‘Oh, man, I am going to die. I think it’s over.’ And he said: ‘No, no, it’s not like that,'” Johnson previously said.Later, Johnson became an advocate of awareness of the disease theorugh the Magic Johnson Foundation.“I am going to be a spokesman for this HIV virus because I want them (the kids) to understand that safe s*x is the way to go,” he said.

Even amid public fear, some questioned playing alongside him. Concerns from players like Karl Malone reflected the uncertainty of that era. But Johnson’s biggest challenge was not public reaction. It was personal.“The toughest thing I thought I had to do was play Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. But actually, the toughest thing I had to do was to drive home and tell Cookie about HIV,” Johnson said.Support from his wife, Cookie Johnson, became his foundation. Today, decades later, Johnson continues to live with HIV without developing AIDS.
