The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain in parts of Pune accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and 30-40 kmph winds till July 1. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and winds are expected in central Maharashtra till July 3.

By 8.30 am on Monday, Shivajinagar, the main weather office in Pune, recorded 11.5 mm of overnight rain, Chinchwad 2 mm and Pashan 0.5 mm. In the district, only Baramati and Malin recorded light rain: 2 mm and 0.5 mm, respectively.

Pune district has recorded a 47 per cent rainfall deficit between June 1 and 29. In Maharashtra, there has been a 52 per cent shortfall in rain during this period. A result of El Nino in central and eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean, the state has received only 96.2 mm rainfall this month compared to the normal 200 mm.

Shivajinagar station woke up to a morning temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius on Monday, while Pashan recorded 21.6 degrees Celsius. Lavale was marginally cooler at 20.8 degrees Celsius. Hadapsar was among the warmest, recording 25 degrees Celsius. Chinchwad recorded a minimum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and NDA 23.3 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature in Shivajinagar, Pashan and Chinchwad was 32 degrees Celsius, around 3 degrees Celsius above normal. The maximum temperature is expected to drop to 28 degrees Celsius by July 5.
