'Not about spin matchups': Gautam Gambhir reveals real reason behind Sanju Samson’s recall - Watch

Sanju Samson’s return to the India national cricket team playing XI against the West Indies national cricket team had sparked familiar debates around team combinations, balance and tactical adjustments. Many believed the move could have been designed to counter a particular bowling threat or to alter the left-right balance at the top of the order. However, India head coach Gautam Gambhir clarified that the decision had a far simpler rationale behind it.Samson had been omitted for a few matches before being brought back into the side, but Gambhir explained that the call was not influenced by opposition matchups or the presence of an off-spinner from one end. Instead, the management wanted to add even more attacking intent to an already powerful batting lineup.

Dhol, cheers and flowers: How Delhi welcomed Gautam Gambhir

“The reason to get in Sanju was not about managing the off-spinner from the other end. It was about can we get even more firepower at the top, and can we be more aggressive in the first six overs, and we know what Sanju can do,” Gambhir said during an interaction with Jatin Sapru on Star Sports India.

According to Gambhir, the recall was a proactive decision aimed at strengthening India’s ability to dominate the powerplay rather than a reaction to specific tactical concerns.“There was never any doubt about his talent, there was never any doubt about his explosiveness that if he gets going he can win you the game in first six overs as well and imagine having Abhishek, Sanju and Ishan as your top three and then you’ve got the likes of Surya, Hardik, Tilak and Shivam and Axar. So you can’t ask for anything more,” he added. His comments also offered insight into the broader batting approach the team management wants to follow. In Gambhir’s view, Samson is not merely a situational selection but someone capable of significantly strengthening a batting order designed to attack from the start and maintain pressure throughout the innings. He also rejected suggestions that India were overly concerned about having multiple left-handers at the top of the order.“So the reason yes a lot of people will debate about that we wanted to break that three left handers at the top, not at all because I still believe that a quality batter will be good against any bowler, any kind of bowler whether it’s the off spinner or the left-hand spinner.”For Gambhir, the focus remains on skill and intent rather than theoretical matchup disadvantages. The India coach also shared how casually the message about Samson’s inclusion was delivered. “I conveyed it to him in the gym. In fact we both were training together and I just told him that you will be playing tomorrow and he said let it come. That’s the casual conversations we have.”Gambhir explained that the team environment is deliberately kept relaxed, with brief meetings and straightforward conversations instead of long tactical briefings. In that context, Samson’s return reflected both India’s desire for greater batting aggression and a dressing room atmosphere that encourages players to express themselves freely.
