Bengaluru house horror: Man kills mother, ailing sister, injures minor 'over mounting debt'

BENGALURU: Overwhelmed by mounting business debts and the critical illness of his sister, a 26-year-old man allegedly attacked his family members before attempting to kill himself. Two of them died, while the other two, including the alleged attacker, are battling for life. The incident occurred at Mallenahalli near Attibele in Anekal taluk Saturday night. The deceased have been identified as Asha (55) and her daughter Varshita (32), who both died on the spot. Mayank, 12, and Mohan MR, 26, who were found critically injured, were rushed to a private hospital at Attibele.According to police, Mohan recorded a video before the incident, stating that they were unable to bear the pressure from lenders and were therefore taking the extreme step. The video was shared with relatives.Asha and her family were residing in their own house, and their relatives were staying in adjacent buildings.Their relatives and neighbours, who reportedly heard distressing sounds, gathered at the house and found the main door locked from inside. Mohan’s paternal uncle, Shekar, peeped through the window and noticed blood on the floor of the hall. They broke open the door and found Asha and Mayank lying in a pool of blood in the hall, while Varshita was found dead in a wheelchair. Mohan was lying on the floor. The relatives noticed some movement in Mayank and Mohan, and they were rushed to a nearby hospital, while police were alerted. After first aid, Mayank and Mohan were shifted to Narayana Hrudayalaya, where they are undergoing treatment in the ICU.Preliminary investigations by police suggest that Mohan, who was involved in a chit fund and other businesses and was overwhelmed by financial distress, may have attacked Asha, Varshita, and Mayank with a knife and slit their throats before attempting to take his own life in a similar manner.

What do you think is the most significant factor contributing to such incidents?

Relatives alleged that harassment by creditors may have pushed the family to take the extreme step. Both Asha and Varshita were homemakers. Mayank is Varshita’s son.Varshita was suffering from a brain tumour for over a year and a half and was reportedly in a critical condition. She was unable to move on her own and confined to a wheelchair. The family had incurred significant debt for her treatment, along with losses in the chit fund business, which may have contributed to the distress. She had lost her husband a few years ago due to cardiac arrest. Mohan’s father also passed away a few years ago.A case of murder and attempt to suicide has been registered at Attibele police station in Bengaluru Rural district.
