A 47-year-old businessman died after allegedly jumping off the Bandra-Worli sea-link in the wee hours of Wednesday. Police said the deceased was in a taxi and he asked the driver to stop at sea-link. He shouted about snake bite and jumped into the sea. Later his body was found at seashore near Juhu in the jurisdiction of the Santacruz police station.

According to the police, the deceased, Amit Chopra, lived in Andheri (west) with his wife and son. The deceased is into the business of imitation jewellery. During preliminary investigation, police said it appears the person took drastic steps due to business loss, but it could be confirmed only after a detailed inquiry. The police have not found any note from his possession or from his residence. Chopra is originally from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, and all his relatives live there.

The incident occurred around 1.30 am on Wednesday. He boarded the taxi from Andheri and once the taxi reached sea-link via Bandra, Chopra started shouting that he had been bitten by a snake and asked the driver to stop the taxi. The taxi driver stopped the taxi on the side. Chopra opened the door and directly jumped from the sea-link, said a police officer of the Bandra police station. The taxi driver got scared and he immediately informed the security staff at sea-link, and the police were also informed.

The Bandra police recorded the statement of the taxi driver and registered a missing person complaint. The body was found around 10 am near Juhu when the fishermen informed the police. The Santacruz police and fire brigade team reached the spot, and the body was sent for post-mortem. The family was informed, and the driver also identified the body as of the same person who jumped off the sea-link, said a police officer.
