At least 11 people were killed and three others injured in a mass shooting in South Africa, police said on Wednesday. One of the victims was a woman believed to be pregnant.The shooting took place late Tuesday night at a house in KwaMakhutha township, around 30 km (19 miles) south of Durban on South Africa’s east coast, the Associated Press reported.According to police, the victims had gathered at the house for a party when three assailants entered and opened fire, the Associated Press reported. Ten people, including the pregnant woman, died at the scene, while an 11th victim was pronounced dead at a hospital.Police said they were searching for three suspects and that no arrests had been made. Authorities did not immediately provide details about the condition of the three injured people.The motive for the shooting was not immediately known. Police said some of the people at the house were known to them in connection with investigations into criminal activity, but did not provide further details.“Although the motive of the shooting cannot be confirmed yet, (a) feud between rival groupings cannot be ruled out,” police said, AP reported.Thami Ntuli, premier of KwaZulu-Natal province, described the killings as “really disturbing”. He said the largely impoverished community had known problems with drug dealing and illegal firearms.Police cordoned off the area as forensic investigators examined the scene for evidence. Authorities were also investigating whether a car that was set on fire near the house was connected to the shooting.The KwaMakhutha shooting is the latest in a series of mass shootings reported in South Africa in recent months.In June, multiple shooters killed 12 people in a poor neighbourhood in Johannesburg in an incident police linked to criminal gangs. Two other mass shootings, reported two weeks apart in December, left 21 people dead.South Africa has one of the world’s highest rates of violent crime. Official police statistics recorded 5,427 homicides between April and June, an average of nearly 60 killings a day.
