NHL Trade Rumors: Penguins linked to $92.8 million Western Conference forward after latest insider report

Trade speculation surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins continues to grow, even as much of the league remains focused on Jason Robertson’s uncertain future in Dallas. Another elite forward has now entered the conversation. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Penguins could emerge as a possible destination for Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson, whose long-term future has been questioned after an underwhelming season. Pettersson is signed to an eight-year, $92.8 million contract that carries an annual salary cap hit of $11.6 million, making any potential move one of the biggest storylines to watch.

Which teams are interested in Elias Pettersson?

The Pittsburgh Penguins have emerged as one of the latest teams connected to Pettersson, though no formal trade discussions have been confirmed. The link comes at a time when the franchise is trying to balance its present with its future. With Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin nearing the closing stages of their careers, Pittsburgh faces increasing pressure to add another high-end forward capable of carrying the team into its next era. Pettersson, despite a difficult campaign by his own standards, remains one of the NHL’s most talented centers when playing at his best.Adding him would immediately strengthen Pittsburgh’s top-six group while giving the club a potential franchise centerpiece beyond the Crosby-Malkin era. The financial commitment would be significant, but so would the upside if Pettersson rediscovered the form that once made him a 100-point player.

What insiders are saying about the trade rumors

The latest speculation gained traction after Friedman discussed Pettersson’s situation on the 32 Thoughts podcast.“Here’s another one that I’ve wondered about, and that is Pettersson. Elias Pettersson from the Canucks,” Friedman said during a recent 32 Thoughts podcast. “And, remember, he has control, but… look, all of a sudden, he’s got to play better. And that $11.6 (million), everyone’s been talking about that, I know. But, again, the ground has shifted here in a huge way. I’ve sat there, and I’ve said, ‘Where could he go that could be good for him?’“I don’t know. I wonder if the Penguins with Crosby and Malkin might be good for him.”While Friedman’s comments reflect his own assessment rather than confirmation of negotiations, they have added fresh momentum to an already active rumor cycle surrounding the Canucks forward.

Contract details and salary cap implications

Pettersson remains under contract for several more seasons with an $11.6 million annual cap hit, making him one of the league’s highest-paid forwards. His deal gives Vancouver long-term cost certainty, but it also makes any trade difficult. A club acquiring Pettersson would need both cap flexibility and confidence that he can return to elite production. There has been no indication that a buyout is under consideration, and any potential deal would likely require a substantial return because of his age, talent and contract length.

How the trade could impact both teams

For Pittsburgh, landing Pettersson would signal an aggressive push to stay competitive while Crosby remains the face of the franchise. He could slot into the top six, ease the offensive burden on the veteran core and provide a long-term building block. For Vancouver, however, the focus remains on helping Pettersson regain his best form rather than moving him. That message became even clearer after franchise icon Henrik Sedin publicly challenged the star forward while expressing confidence in his potential. When asked about Pettersson’s future, Sedin said:“Yeah, it’s a Canadian market,” Sedin answered. “There’s going to be a lot of talk about your best players and the guy who gets paid the most, that’s just the way it is. And especially where he’s been in his career, putting up over 100 points. I think for him, we’re going to be there to support him. I mean, in the end, he needs to decide, we can’t push him to do anything. He needs to decide what player he wants to be, because when he is prepared and comes into the season well prepared, I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people. But it’s going to be up to him to decide what he wants to do.”For now, the trade chatter remains speculative. But with Pettersson carrying both elite talent and a major contract, his situation is likely to stay under close watch as the offseason unfolds.
