A 13-year-old student at a government school in Bengaluru Urban district died allegedly by suicide at her home Thursday, with the police investigating whether a reported classroom incident and subsequent questioning by school authorities contributed to the death.
According to the police, the Class 8 student and a few classmates allegedly coined a nickname for one of the teachers and the headmistress questioned the students about it Tuesday. The police said some students allegedly identified the girl as being responsible.
Investigators said the student was repeatedly questioned at school, and after returning home Thursday, she allegedly died by suicide.
“During our inquiry, we found that the classroom incident occurred on Tuesday and that she was questioned about it over the following three days. The note’s contents indicate she felt humiliated by the episode,” a police officer said.
Her family found her body Friday morning.
“I heard some teachers troubled her at school, but I don’t know which teacher or teachers. I don’t know what exactly happened,” the girl’s mother told reporters.

The police said they have recorded the statements of students and school staff and are investigating whether the alleged humiliation and the circumstances surrounding the headmistress’s questioning led the student to take the extreme step.
The police also said they found, during the investigation, that allegations that the student had stolen money were untrue.

According to investigators, the only money-related issue they found was a school practice of imposing fines of Rs 10 or Rs 20 on students who failed to complete their homework. “The fines collected for incomplete homework have no connection with this case, and the allegations of theft are not true,” the police officer added.
Following the incident, G Gurumurthy, field education officer, visited the school and inspected the premises as part of the departmental inquiry. Officers from the local police station also visited the spot and conducted a preliminary investigation.
The headmistress was contacted for her response to the allegations. However, she did not respond to calls or messages seeking her comments.
The police said a case of Unnatural Death Report (UDR) has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
