A speeding motorcycle with two teenagers on board allegedly ran over a senior citizen and crashed along the Marine Drive Monday morning, leaving all three dead.

Police said the incident took place around 5.40 am when Krushna Desai, 19, allegedly riding the motorcycle at high speed, rammed 62-year-old Kishore Lamne who was crossing the road. In the impact, Lamne was thrown onto the road, while the rider lost control, critically injuring himself and his pillion rider, Chandani Imam Ali Shaikh, 18.

All three were rushed by bystanders to Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. Police said an FIR is being registered against the rider for rash and negligent driving.

According to the family of Lamne, a retired bank employee, he followed a strict routine of walking between 4.30 am and 6 am every day. On Monday he did not return home at the usual time. “We called his phone, and it was answered by the police. That’s how we learnt about the accident,” a family member said. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law and a granddaughter.

Shaikh, who lived in Geeta Nagar in Colaba, worked as a telecaller and sales coordinator. However, there were differing accounts from her family about why she was at Marine Drive at that hour. Her brother claimed she had stepped out for a morning jog when the speeding motorcycle hit her — a version that contradicts the police account that she was riding pillion with Desai.

Police said her identity was established only around 1.30 pm, after her phone was recovered from the scene. The families were informed thereafter.

According to police, Krushna Desai resided at MHADA Colony in Mulund and worked as a delivery boy. It was his birthday on Sunday. He had dinner with friends in Mulund and told them that he was going home to celebrate the day with family. However he switched off his phone and went to South Mumbai to meet Chandani Shaikh from where they went to Marine Drive , said Nilesh Bagul, senior inspector of Marine Drive police station.

“Youngsters need to understand the consequences of overspeeding. A moment’s thrill can cost lives,” a family member of Lamne said while waiting outside G T Hospital for the bodies.
Investigators said they were examining CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses to establish the exact sequence of events, including whether there were any additional factors involved.
