Ecstasy decoded: How a ‘party drug’ claimed lives of 2 MBA students at Mumbai concert

MUMBAI: The deaths of two MBA students at a music concert in Mumbai have once again put the spotlight on ecstasy (MDMA) — a party drug often associated with nightlife but capable of turning fatal within hours.Known on the street as “Molly” or “E”, ecstasy is a synthetic psychoactive substance that stimulates the brain while also inducing mild hallucinations. It is commonly consumed in pill form — often brightly coloured — and is widely used at concerts, rave parties and festivals. What is ecstasy? It is a synthetic psychoactive drug that acts as both a stimulant and a mild hallucinogen.Chemical name: Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)Street names: Ecstasy, MollyForm: Pills (often coloured, such as yellow), powder, crystalsHow the drug worksOnce consumed, ecstasy triggers a surge of serotonin, the brain chemical responsible for mood and emotional regulation. This leads to:30–45 minutes: Euphoria, increased energy1-3 hours: Dehydration, overheating, restlessnessAfter-effects: Anxiety, fatigue, confusionBrain: Serotonin surge leading to mood elevationHeart: Increased heart rate and blood pressureBody temperature: Risk of overheatingOrgans: Strain on liver and kidneysHowever, this “high” comes at a cost. Why it becomes dangerousOverdose warning signs:High body temperature, rapid or irregular heartbeat, confusion or panic, seizures, loss of consciousness. In crowded, high-energy environments like concerts, these risks multiply — especially when combined with alcohol or repeated doses. What went wrong at Mumbai concert? In this case, police suspect:

  • Pills were consumed during peak physical exertion (dancing)
  • Victims may have taken unverified or high-potency tablets
  • Delay in recognising symptoms like uneasiness proved critical

Unlike some drugs, MDMA dosage is unregulated and unpredictable. Pills sold as “ecstasy” may contain:

  • Higher-than-safe MDMA levels
  • Toxic adulterants
  • Completely different synthetic drugs
