Jimmy Kimmel welcomed Super Bowl LX winning head coach Mike Macdonald on a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. The host called him “the third youngest coach to win a Super Bowl in NFL history” and “the second [—-] Super Bowl winning coach of all-time, after Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs.” He then asked about an out-of-body experience Macdonald had on the gridiron after trouncing the New England Patriots on February 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Macdonald admitted, “Well, I have a bad history with memes now, between that and ‘We Did Not Care.’ It’s funny, it all happened really fast, we were trying to tackle the guy in bounds so the game would end. So, it’s like the game’s over, and one of our coaches is like, ‘Hey! You just won the Super Bowl.’That was pretty cool, so now I have to go shake hands. Then the Gatorade came, which was awesome. And then there’s cameras everywhere, so I’m like awkward, I’m not trying to look at the cameras, I don’t know what to do, [points upwards] so there’s fireworks going, so my head goes up, I was looking at the fireworks.”

Seattle Seahawks youngest head coach doesn’t scream

Then Jimmy Kimmel asked the most basic questions, likely on every NFL fan’s mind. Kimmel told Macdonald he seemed level-headed and asked, “Aren’t football coaches supposed to be a little nuts, a little crazy?” Macdonald shyly admits, “I can get a little crazy.” Kimmel asked if he screamed at the players. Macdonald admits, “No, I don’t scream.”

Mike Macdonald should get a separate salary for defensive calls

The host noted an unusual scenario where Macdonald called all the defensive plays, even as the head coach. The 38-year-old former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator replied, “When I grew up, when I started coaching, I just wanted to be a defensive coordinator. I didn’t really have aspirations to be a head coach.” The current defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks is Aden Durde, a former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker. Kimmel wondered whether Macdonald should receive a separate salary for serving as the Seahawks’ DC. The coach replied, “I don’t know, maybe [general manager] John [Schneider] and [owner] Jody [Allen] are listening… I don’t know.”

A genius coach for acquiring Sam Darnold from Minnesota Vikings

The host then asked, “You won the Super Bowl. [New England Patriots head coach] Mike Vrabel won Coach of the Year. Do you think that should be taken from him and given to you?” Mike chuckled and said, “No.” There was one more question: “Sam Darnold, the quarterback, has been with you for one year. He came from the [Minnesota] Vikings, which is pretty crazy. You look like a genius now. That really looks like a great decision, doesn’t it?”Mike shared, “It wasn’t all my decision. John Schneider had a lot to do with it [our general manager]. Yeah, we look pretty smart right now.” The host pinched, “Would it make sense to have a new quarterback every season?” Mike said, “We flew down here with Sam [Darnold]. So, I’m going to say no.”

Seattle will search for new offensive coordinator now after Klint Kubiak

Kimmel asked how soon Macdonald would think about the next season. Macdonald replied, “It’s tough. Our offensive coordinator [Klint Kubiak] left for the [Las Vegas] Raiders.” Kimmel suggested Macdonald could give offensive calls as he did with defensive calls. Macdonald chuckled and said, “Unfortunately, we got to hire somebody new and get moving, but we’ve got a parade to celebrate on Wednesday first.” Hundreds and thousands of fans are expected to flood downtown for the Seahawks’ Super Bowl LX championship parade on Wednesday. In 2014, nearly 700,000 people packed the streets with some arriving as early as 6:30 AM. This time, officials predict close to 1 million people could be in attendance.
