    Chief Justice of India BR Gavai recommends Justice Surya Kant as successor

    Incumbent Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai, on Monday wrote to the Centre, recommending Justice Surya Kant as his successor. Justice Kant will take over as the 53rd Chief Justice when CJI Gavai demits office on November 23 and will remain in office till February 9, 2027. Justice Kant, who became the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018, was elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019. He has been a part of several key judgments since his elevation to the country’s top court. Read more

    No contempt proceedings against lawyer who threw shoe at CJI: SC

    The Supreme Court on Monday said that it did not want to initiate criminal contempt against the lawyer who threw a shoe at CJI BR Gavai and preferred the incident to have a “natural death.” The SC bench, while noting that the incident “is a serious concern,” indicated that it would lay down guidelines to ensure that such acts do not recur. The SC was hearing a plea by the SCBA seeking criminal contempt proceedings against the accused, RakeshKishore, who allegedly threw a shoe at CJI Gavai during proceedings inside the court on October 6.     Trump calls Russia’s nuclear missile test ‘not appropriate’

    US President Donald Trump on Monday urged his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to end the war in Ukraine rather than focus on testing new nuclear weapons. Trump made the comments after Russia announced a successful trial of its long-range Burevestnik nuclear cruise missile. According to Russia, the Burevestnik cruise missile can bypass any existing or future defence systems and is a “unique” weapon which “nobody else in the world has”. Read more

    Himachal lost Rs 46,000 crore to natural disasters in five years

    Himachal Pradesh has suffered an estimated loss of Rs 46,000 crore due to natural disasters over the past five years, a new report has said. According to the first Himachal Pradesh Human Development Report, extreme weather events, recurrent landslides, flash floods, and prolonged droughts are reshaping the state’s development trajectory. The report released by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday states that climate change is not only causing economic losses but is also altering Himachal’s health landscape. Read more

    Shreyas Iyer admitted to ICU in Sydney due to internal bleeding after rib injury

    India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a Sydney hospital after medical reports revealed internal bleeding from a rib cage injury. The Indian board, after consulting with its medical team, decided to readmit Iyer to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

    “It’s a freak injury and the medical team is in touch with the hospital. The medical team had advised him to be admitted again, as there was bleeding in his rib cage. We are expecting him to be fine later this week,” a BCCI official said. Read more
