The Bengaluru police have arrested two people, including a rejected suitor, for the murder of a 20-year-old pharmacy student whose body was found behind the Mantri Mall in north Bengaluru two days ago.

Yamini Priya had rejected the marriage proposal of Vignesh alias Sanjay, 26, an unemployed neighbour, and he killed her on a street in north Bengaluru, the police said on Friday, following the arrests of Vignesh and an associate, Harish, 30.

According to a police complaint filed by the mother of Yamini Priya, she was being harassed by a man who lived opposite their house and was known to the woman’s family by pressuring her for marriage.

At around 2.30 pm on Thursday, when Yamini Priya, a first-year pharmacy student, was returning home after appearing for an exam at her college, Vignesh allegedly approached her again and insisted that she marry him. When the student refused to engage with the man, he allegedly fatally attacked her with a sharp weapon.

The student, who died due to excessive bleeding, was found by the public near the railway tracks behind the Mantri Mall on Thursday afternoon and was identified as Yamini Priya, a resident of Srirampura.

Based on the suspicion expressed by Yamini Priya’s family, the police began a manhunt for Vignesh on Thursday and tracked him down on Friday afternoon, along with his associate who had sheltered him after the incident in Soladevanahalli.

“Upon interrogation, the main accused confessed that he killed the complainant’s daughter out of anger and frustration because she had refused his marriage proposal,” a police officer said.

Harish was also allegedly at the scene of the crime and had transported Vignesh on a motorcycle to accost Yamini Priya.
