HYDERABAD: In a major road accident involving a private travel bus and a lorry on national highway in Suryapet district, six persons died and 20 other passengers got injured.Suryapet police said that six dead include five females. The accident took place around 5 am at Dorakunta in Suryapet district on Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway. A lorry laden with metal poles was travelling from Suryapet towards Vijayawada.Enroute when the lorry driver in an attempt to overtake a bus, hit the road divider at high speed and got on to the median before coming to a halt. Few minutes later, the bus driver, after failing to notice the accident, hit the lorry, end up hitting it.“Half of the lorry was on the divider, whereas the other half was on the road. The bus driver still failed to notice it for unknown reasons and hit the rearside of the lorry at high speed. Right side of the bus took maximum impact,” district police said.The onlookers and passersby called the police, who reached the spot. Due to the impact of the accident, a portion of the bus got crushed and the passengers got trapped. The panic struck passengers, many injured, were heard screaming for help. Some managed to jump out using the windows.There were more than 40 passengers in the bus at the time of the accident. The accident led to a traffic jam on the highway. The bus was travelling from Hyderabad to Eluru in Andhra Pradesh.
