'51 years of bad behaviour': Trump takes swipe at Iran with 'no money' claims
The post comes as Trump has repeatedly argued that Iran’s economy has been weakened by years of international sanctions, regional conflicts and what he has described as the Iranian leadership’s confrontational policies.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday criticised Iran in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, sharing a graphic titled “Iran has NO MONEY” and blaming the country’s economic decline on what he described as “51 years of bad behaviour.”The post, which was accompanied by a chart showing the sharp depreciation of the Iranian rial against the US dollar, appeared to be Trump’s latest public attack on Tehran amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran.

Trump calls Iran’s currency ‘trash’

The image shared by Trump claimed that 1 million Iranian rials was worth about $1.11 in early 2025, but had fallen to around $0.53 by the third quarter of 2026. A downward-sloping graph tracked the currency’s decline across several quarters, ending with the caption “Currency is Trash” next to a trash-bin icon. The graphic was designed to suggest that Iran’s currency had lost more than half of its value over the period shown, portraying the country as being in severe economic distress. Trump did not provide additional commentary beyond the caption “51 years of bad behavior!”, which appeared above the image on Truth Social. The post comes as Trump has repeatedly argued that Iran’s economy has been weakened by years of international sanctions, regional conflicts and what he has described as the Iranian leadership’s confrontational policies. His administration has continued to maintain pressure on Tehran through sanctions and military deployments in the Middle East.Iran’s currency has experienced prolonged depreciation over the past several years, driven by inflation, sanctions-related pressures, reduced foreign investment and instability in foreign exchange markets. Economists have long pointed to structural weaknesses in Iran’s economy, although the specific exchange-rate figures circulated on social media often depend on which official or parallel-market rate is used.Trump’s post also comes against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Iran confrontation that has intensified in recent weeks.Washington and Tehran have been engaged in escalating military and diplomatic tensions, including US operations targeting Iranian-linked assets and increased American military deployments in the region. The developments have raised concerns over a wider regional conflict, even as backchannel diplomatic efforts involving Gulf states and Oman have reportedly continued in an attempt to prevent further escalation.
