Ahmedabad: 19-year-old pregnant woman dies by suicide over dowry harassment

AHMEDABAD: A 19-year-old woman, who was three months pregnant, hanged herself at her Ghatlodia residence on Friday evening after seven months of marriage. The young woman’s father has filed a complaint with Ghatlodia police, accusing her husband and in-laws of abetment to suicide, citing ongoing harassment over dowry demands and suspicions surrounding her pregnancy.According to the complaint, the woman was treated well by her in-laws for a couple of months after the wedding in March. However, tensions escalated as her in-laws began to verbally abuse her, criticizing her household skills and expressing dissatisfaction with the dowry provided by her family. The FIR details allegations that the in-laws demanded an additional Rs 50,000, claiming it was the remaining balance of a Rs 1.5 lakh dowry agreement. The woman’s brother-in-law allegedly pressured her to obtain the money from her parents. The woman’s father also claimed that she faced suspicion and humiliation regarding her pregnancy, contributing to her mental distress. It was the neighbour who found the woman hanging from the ceiling fan when she went over to her house to invite her for a birthday party. Ghatlodia police have registered an FIR under Sections 85 (domestic violence), 108 (abetment of suicide), and 54 (abetment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Sections 3 and 7 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. An investigation is underway.
