‘Bored of home meals’: Ahmedabad sisters beaten by drunk mom for ordering food online; call helpline

AHMEDABAD: Two girls approached the Abhayam women’s helpline on Wednesday, alleging that their mother had beaten them. The issue arose when they ordered a meal from an online app because they were bored with the meals at home. The counsellors later placed the girls in the custody of their grandparents.“When a team reached the spot, the girls told the counsellors that their parents had divorced five years ago. Their brother now lives with their father, while they live with their mother. The girls said that the mother’s outlook on life, staying out for long periods and drinking alcohol were among the reasons for the separation,” a counsellor said. The girls had been sent to a hostel for their studies but had recently returned home to prepare for their Class 10 and 12 exams. The girls told the counsellors that they often made their own meals when their mother was absent.

“On Wednesday, when their mother had gone out, the girls decided to order meals from outside. When the mother returned around midnight, she scolded and beat the two girls. As she was inebriated, the girls decided to seek help and called the helpline. When the team arrived at the spot, the woman was unable to speak properly. She blamed the girls for not allowing her to enjoy life on her terms,” said a counsellor. The girls requested the team to rescue them and move them to a govt-run facility. The team, however, convinced them to stay with their family to ensure their education did not suffer. The counsellors spoke to the girls’ grandparents, who agreed to take care of them. “The woman was also counselled and asked to mend her ways for the sake of the girls’ education and careers,” a counsellor said.
