Career turning point: “I’m literally living my dream right now”: How Coco Gauff’s victory over Venus Williams at Wimbledon changed the course of her career forever

Coco Gauff had already built a reputation as one of tennis’ brightest young prospects before Wimbledon 2019. She was a former junior world No. 1, reached the US Open girls’ singles final at 13 and won the French Open girls’ singles title a year later. She had also made her WTA main-draw debut earlier that season. There was plenty of excitement around the 15-year-old, but she was still trying to prove that her junior success could translate to the senior level. Wimbledon gave her that opportunity in a way nobody could have predicted.Gauff entered Wimbledon qualifying ranked No. 313 and became the youngest player to qualify for the tournament’s main draw in the Open Era. Her reward was a first-round meeting with Venus Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion and one of the players who had inspired her to play tennis. Gauff did not simply compete with her idol. She beat Williams 6-4, 6-4 and continued all the way to the fourth round. The victory immediately changed her status in tennis, turning a promising teenager into a global name and setting the foundation for everything that followed.

Why was beating Venus Williams the turning point in Coco Gauff’s career?

Gauff had already accomplished more than most players her age before arriving at the All England Club. Her junior achievements had made her a highly regarded prospect, while her first WTA win against Caty McNally at the Miami Open showed she could compete against professionals. Still, those results were mostly about potential. She had not yet produced a senior victory that could completely change the conversation around her. That changed when Gauff came through three rounds of Wimbledon qualifying without dropping a set. She then learned that Venus Williams would be waiting for her in the main draw. The matchup was almost impossible to script. Williams was 39 years old, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and a five-time Wimbledon winner. Gauff was 15 and playing in her first Grand Slam main draw. The teenager responded with remarkable composure. She won the first set 6-4 and kept her nerve when Williams tried to fight back in the second. Gauff eventually closed out another 6-4 set, and when Williams sent the final forehand into the net, the teenager dropped to the court in disbelief before breaking down in tears.“I never thought this would happen. I don’t know how to explain it. I’m literally living my dream. Not many people get to say that,” Gauff said afterward. The moment carried extra meaning because Venus was not simply another opponent. Gauff had grown up watching Venus and Serena Williams and had spoken about how much they had influenced her. After the match, she thanked Venus for everything she had done and told her that she would not be where she was without her inspiration.Williams also recognized what Gauff had just accomplished. Asked about the teenager’s future, she said, “I think the sky’s the limit, it really is,” while praising Gauff’s serving, movement and composure. The official Roland-Garros account later described the match as the one that created “a brand new superstar.” USTA also highlighted the Venus victory as the breakout win that began Gauff’s meteoric rise in 2019. Those descriptions explain why this particular match stands above her earlier junior achievements. Gauff had already shown that she could become a star. Beating Venus at Wimbledon showed that she was ready to start becoming one.

How did the Wimbledon breakthrough change Coco Gauff’s path?

The Venus victory would have been memorable on its own, but what Gauff did afterward made the breakthrough even more significant. She returned for the second round and defeated former Wimbledon semifinalist Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-3. Then she faced Polona Hercog and found herself in serious trouble after falling behind 6-3, 5-2. Gauff still fought back, saved two match points and eventually won 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.Her run finally ended against Simona Halep in the fourth round, but by then the teenager had already changed her career. She entered Wimbledon ranked No. 313 and climbed to No. 141 afterward. More importantly, she had gained the experience of playing deep into a Grand Slam while dealing with a level of attention that she had never experienced before. The spotlight followed her to the US Open. Gauff reached the third round after defeating Anastasia Potapova and Tímea Babos before losing to defending champion Naomi Osaka. The result showed that Wimbledon had not been a one-week fluke. She was now regularly competing with established professionals and attracting huge attention wherever she played. Her breakthrough year continued in Linz, Austria. Gauff had lost in the final round of qualifying but entered the main draw as a lucky loser after a player withdrew. She made the most of the opportunity, beating top seed Kiki Bertens and former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko on her way to the title. At 15, she became the youngest WTA singles champion in 15 years. The ranking rise was just as remarkable. Gauff began 2019 ranked No. 685 and finished the season at No. 68. In less than a year, she had gone from a promising junior outside the world’s top 600 to one of the youngest players inside the WTA’s top 100.That progression is important when considering the Venus match as her turning point. Wimbledon did not suddenly create Gauff’s talent. The talent was already there. What the tournament did was give her the stage to prove it against a legend, and the results that followed showed that she could handle the attention and expectations that came with that victory.

How did that teenage breakthrough eventually lead to the champion Coco Gauff is today?

Gauff’s career continued to develop after her extraordinary 2019 season, and the teenager who once dreamed of becoming a Grand Slam champion eventually reached that milestone. She won her first major singles title at the 2023 US Open, followed by the WTA Finals in 2024 and her second Grand Slam singles title at Roland-Garros in 2025. She also reached a career-high ranking of No. 2, establishing herself among the leading players of her generation. Her latest success in 2026 has added another interesting chapter to the story. Gauff won the Cincinnati Open for the second time in August, defeating Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 in the final. The victory gave her 12 career WTA singles titles and made her only the third woman, after Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, to win the Cincinnati WTA 1000 twice. The difference between that victory and her Wimbledon breakthrough is striking. In 2019, Gauff was a 15-year-old qualifier who had nothing to lose against one of her idols. In 2026, she is an established Grand Slam champion who enters major tournaments with opponents preparing specifically for her. The expectations have completely changed, but the competitive mindset that helped her survive that first Wimbledon run remains a major part of her game. That is ultimately why the victory over Venus deserves to be viewed as the defining turning point of Gauff’s early career. It did not guarantee the trophies that came later, because those required years of development, difficult losses and constant improvement. What it gave her was something equally important at that stage: proof that she could handle the biggest occasion against one of the biggest names in tennis.Gauff arrived at Wimbledon as a 15-year-old qualifier ranked No. 313. She left as one of the sport’s most talked-about young stars. Seven years later, she has two Grand Slam singles titles, a WTA Finals championship and 12 WTA singles titles, with her latest Cincinnati triumph coming in 2026.The dream she spoke about after beating Venus was only beginning to take shape. Today, Gauff is no longer the teenager hoping to prove she belongs. She is one of the players standing at the center of the sport, and it all started with the day she stunned her idol at Wimbledon.
