Google has confirmed that its Drive desktop app will stop supporting automatic Google Photos backup starting August 10, 2026. The change means that the users who rely on Drive’s desktop client to sync photos and videos from their computers will no longer see a new media automatically backed up to Google Photos. The company said that this move is part of its effort to simplify backup tools and also focus on dedicated photo management via the Photos app. “Google Drive for desktop ends support for Google Photos backup on August 10, 2026. To stop backing up existing folders before this date, use these instructions. To continue backing up folders after this date, you must add photos & videos from Google Drive to Google Photos,” said Google.
What is changing for Google Photos users
Currently, the Google Drive desktop app allows users to designate a folder on their computer to be automatically backed up to Google Photos, a convenient way to keep photo libraries synced to the cloud without manual uploads. From August 10, that automatic connection between Drive for desktop and Google Photos stops working entirely. Any folders still configured for this kind of backup will no longer upload new photos or videos once the cutoff hits.Importantly, this doesn’t mean Google Drive or Google Photos themselves are shutting down.
