Amazon gets $600 million Trump tariff refund: Two ways company is passing on these millions to buyers
Amazon got $600 million back in Trump tariff refunds. Some shoppers will be reimbursed automatically, no claim needed.

Amazon has collected roughly $600 million in tariff refunds, and some of that money is heading back to shoppers. Finance chief Brian Olsavsky put the number on record during Thursday’s second-quarter earnings call, ending months of silence over whether the company would even apply for the cash. The refunds trace back to February, when the Supreme Court struck down the tariffs Donald Trump imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977, forcing the government to repay duties it had already collected from importers.Olsavsky sketched out two routes for the money. Where Amazon can trace a specific import charge to a specific order, it will contact the buyer directly and issue the refund automatically. No claim form, no deadline, nothing for customers to file. Everything else goes into price cuts across the store, which is the same answer Walmart gave.

Why the $600 million refund is smaller than Amazon’s size suggests

Olsavsky called the amount limited, and explained why. Amazon spent months forward-buying and pre-positioning inventory before the tariffs landed, so a chunk of its stock never attracted duties in the first place. The bigger reason is structural: Amazon isn’t the importer of record for most of what sits on its site. Third-party sellers account for more than 60% of goods sold on the marketplace, and they pay the duties themselves, which means they file for their own refunds too. That matters for anyone checking their order history. Open a past order, hit view order details, and the seller name tells you whether Amazon or an outside merchant handled the import. Only the first category is in play for automatic reimbursement.

How Trump’s tariff refund fight put Amazon in an awkward spot

Amazon had said nothing about refunds until this week, and the silence drew a lawsuit. In May, consumers filed a class action in Seattle federal court arguing they were owed money for tariff-inflated prices, and alleging Amazon was skipping the refund process to stay in the administration’s good books. Trump had told CNBC in April he would “remember” companies that didn’t file. The company has been here before. In April 2025, a plan to display tariff costs next to product listings was scrapped after Trump called Jeff Bezos personally.Amazon hasn’t said how many customers qualify, which products were affected, or when the money starts landing. The wider refund pipeline is still moving: the US Treasury paid out $49.2 billion in customs refunds in June alone, against an estimated $166 billion owed. Apple said tariff refunds lifted its quarterly earnings per share by 11 cents. FedEx begins issuing customer refunds in August.
