'It's all out in the media': Shubman Gill denies Rohit Sharma retirement talks after Lord's defeat

India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill said there has been no discussion within the team about the third ODI against England at Lord’s being Rohit Sharma‘s final match, adding that the senior opener has not told his teammates anything about his future.Gill made the remarks after India’s 27-run defeat to England in the series-deciding third ODI at Lord’s. Amid speculation over his ODI future, Rohit entered the record books by becoming the first Indian to score an ODI century at Lord’s. The 39-year-old made 138 off 110 balls in what was his 19th year in ODI cricket. There had been widespread speculation before the match that Rohit could bring down the curtain on his ODI career after the series decider. The opener responded with a century that kept India in the chase before they eventually fell short.India finished on 360 for 7 in reply to England’s 387 for 3, losing the match by 27 runs despite Rohit’s effort.“He’s not told us anything. I think it’s all out in the media, but there’s not been any discussion like that in the team,” Gill said.Rohit and Gill added 147 for the opening wicket to give India a strong start. Rohit was dismissed in the 39th over with India on 260, leaving the visitors needing another 128 runs.Gill credited Rohit’s experience and the way he built his innings.“I think the way Rohit bhai paced his innings was outstanding,” Gill said.“Most of the time, I was at the non-striker’s end just watching him bat. Our discussions were mainly about keeping wickets in hand because that was the only way we could chase such a big total.

“During the Powerplay, we spoke about whether we should go after the bowling or not, but we know it’s not easy to attack against the new ball. The way he paced his innings and then accelerated was exceptional. Once he got into the 60s and 70s, it was truly a treat to watch.”
