5 Sun-loving houseplants that are perfect for hot summer days

Every plant parent, knows the joy of bringing home a beautiful leafy friend, finding it the perfect spot, watering it with love and turning the home into little green sanctuary. They also know the heartbreak of watching those same healthy leaves droop, turn yellow and slowly give up as the scorching summer sun takes over.Apartments often get hours of direct sunlight, balconies can be heat traps and not everyone has the time to take care of plants every single day. Fortunately, not all houseplants are created that way. If you are looking to add some green to your home, but don’t want to worry about the sweltering heat, then these five easy-care sun-lovers should be on your list.

Snake plant: The survivor

The snake plant would be a strong contender for the award of the toughest house plant. Its tall, upright foliage can take anything from bright indirect light to several hours of direct sun. It’s not bothered if you forget to water it for a few days and is said to help to improve indoor air quality. The only thing it can’t tolerate is wet soil. The potting mix should dry out completely before it is watered again.

Aloe vera: Beauty with benefits

Aloe vera’s thick leaves hold water so it can make it through long, hot summer days without breaking a sweat. Its leaves contain a soothing gel that has made it a household favourite for generations, often used on minor burns and skin irritations. It needs six hours of sunlight, well-draining soil and water only when the soil has dried out.

Bougainvillea: A riot of colour

Bougainvillea seems to thrive on summer. The more sun it gets the brighter and fuller its colourful blooms get. It is also very drought tolerant, making it a good option for busy homeowners who can’t always stick to a watering schedule.Plant it in a large pot on a balcony or terrace, or let it climb up a railing and your outdoor space will feel completely transformed in no time.

Portulaca: Tiny flowers, endless blooms

Also called the Ten O’Clock Flower because its flowers tend to open later in the morning, this cheerful plant blooms in pink, yellow, orange, red and white from early summer to fall.It grows quickly, spreads easily and blooms for months with very little care.

Bay laurel: The subtle charmer

If you’re looking for something a little more sophisticated than bright coloured flowers, then bay laurel is worth a look. This is an evergreen that produces glossy green leaves and a delicate white blossom with a nice scent, particularly at night. It gets plenty of sunshine and thrives in containers, making it perfect for terraces, balconies and compact urban homes. If you water it regularly when the soil begins to dry, and if you plant it in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil, bay laurel can survive even in the hottest months.

Simple habits to keep your plants happy

Even tough plants enjoy a bit of extra attention during peak summer. Water them early morning or after the sunset to avoid evaporation.Feel the soil before you reach for the watering can. Prune dry leaves or damaged stems to encourage fresh growth. No matter the size of your apartment or balcony, the right plants can instantly make it feel cooler, calmer and more alive. And the best part? These five don’t ask for much in return. Just a little sunshine, an occasional drink of water and a place to call home.
