Gunshots were fired in the northern German city of Stade on Monday, and five people have been reported dead in the shootout, police said.
Police said a “major operation” was underway in the area, while the motive behind the incident remains under investigation, Reuters reported. Stade police added that several others have been injured in the shooting.
A BBC report, quoting a police spokesperson, stated that two people have been arrested and one of them is a male suspect.
The mass shootout took place in a youth centre in central Stade, a town that has a population of around 50,000 and is located west of Hamburg, local media reported.

Police urged the civilians via social media to avoid the area until the operation is underway. “A police operation is currently taking place in Stade. Avoid the area widely!” police said in a post on X.

Investigators have refrained from providing any information related to the background of the shootout, as a large number of emergency services are currently present at the scene, Euro News reported.
The shooting took place in the facility on Dankersstrasse, a street south of the town center and the area has been cleared with no ongoing threat to the public, police officials said, reports stated.
