Former NFL running back Doug Martin’s death shocked the football world when news broke that he had died at 36 last October. Now, a fresh lawsuit has brought troubling new details into focus as Doug Martin’s parents are pushing for answers about his final moments.Recent reports say the lawsuit targets the City of Oakland, the Oakland Police Department, and ambulance provider Falck Northern California. The family claims Doug Martin’s final moments involved police restraint and delayed emergency care during what they describe as a mental health crisis.

Doug Martin’s cause of death: Ex-NFL star’s parents claim police restraint played a role in his death

According to recent reports, Doug Martin’s mother called for medical help after the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star began struggling during a mental health episode at home. Before paramedics arrived, Doug Martin reportedly left the house and entered a nearby home, where police later found him. That encounter now sits at the center of the lawsuit. The complaint says officers restrained Doug Martin face down while pressing on his back. The family claims that after officers turned him over, Doug Martin showed no response. Reports say officers initially believed he was pretending to sleep before realizing the situation had turned critical.Per Associated Press, the lawsuit also alleges Doug Martin did not receive timely medical care after becoming unresponsive. His parents claim paramedics arrived more than 15 minutes after officers requested emergency assistance and did not begin treatment immediately after reaching the scene. Alongside the police restraint allegations, the family argues that the delayed medical response was a major factor in Doug Martin’s death.Family attorney John Burris told The Athletic, while discussing the lawsuit, “They just want to know what happened.”He also added, “When you call for help, and the police come, it’s not a death warrant.”Those remarks now sit at the heart of this legal fight. The family believes Doug Martin died from restraint asphyxia, which means pressure during the restraint may have cut off his breathing. An independent pathologist reportedly shared that early opinion, though the official findings are still pending.

Doug Martin’s family wants answers as his football legacy meets a painful final chapter

The lawsuit is not just about damages. Doug Martin’s parents are also looking for the full autopsy and toxicology reports, which have still not been released. Recent reports say the coroner’s investigation remains open.At the same time, Doug Martin’s mother has sent his brain to the Boston University CTE Center for testing. The family wants to know if repeated football hits played a role in his mental state before his death.Doug Martin built a strong NFL career after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted him in the first round. He rushed for over 5,300 yards, scored 30 touchdowns, made two Pro Bowls, and earned First-Team All-Pro honors. Doug Martin also spent his final NFL season with the Las Vegas Raiders. For NFL fans, Doug Martin was one of the league’s most explosive backs at his peak. But right now, his family’s fight has shifted the focus away from football and toward the unanswered questions surrounding Doug Martin’s death.
