Mount Rushmore dream: Donald Trump shares AI-generated image of himself next to celebrated US Presidents

US President Donald Trump has reignited discussion over his place in American history after sharing an AI-generated image of himself carved alongside four former US presidents on Mount Rushmore, reviving a years-long push tied to his stated ambition of appearing on the national monument. The AI-generate image, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform, depicted the US president’s face added beside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln on the towering granite sculpture in South Dakota’s Black Hills. Trump shared the image without any accompanying statement, but the post quickly drew attention online because of his previous remarks about wanting his likeness permanently etched into the landmark.

Trump Truth Social post

The image resurfaced debate over Trump’s repeated assertions that the achievements of his presidency warrant inclusion on the monument, which is widely regarded as one of America’s most recognisable national memorials. The idea dates back to a 2018 meeting with South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, during which Trump reportedly told her it was his “dream” to see his face added to Mount Rushmore. At the time, the suggestion was widely treated as symbolic political rhetoric, but Trump later continued to publicly champion the idea.During a speech delivered at Mount Rushmore in 2020 ahead of Independence Day celebrations, Trump again referenced his admiration for the monument while presenting himself as a defender of American heritage and national identity. Since then, several allies and supporters have openly backed the proposal.Among the most prominent supporters is Florida representative Anna Paulina Luna, who introduced legislation directing the US department of the interior to oversee the addition of Trump’s likeness to the monument. The proposal argued that Trump’s leadership and political influence justified his inclusion alongside the four presidents already immortalised on the site.Senior administration officials have also helped sustain the discussion. Interior secretary Doug Burgum previously suggested that the landmark may still have sufficient space to accommodate another presidential figure, comments that further fuelled public speculation over whether the idea could ever move beyond symbolism.

What is Mount Rushmore?

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, located near Keystone in South Dakota, features 60-foot-tall sculptures carved directly into granite cliffs in the Black Hills. The monument was created to represent major chapters in the development of the United States, including the country’s founding, territorial expansion, economic rise and preservation during periods of national crisis. Its sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, deliberately selected Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln to symbolise the first 150 years of American history. George Washington represents the birth of the republic and the struggle for independence, Thomas Jefferson symbolises territorial expansion through initiatives such as the Louisiana Purchase, Theodore Roosevelt reflects industrial growth and America’s emergence as a global power, while Abraham Lincoln stands for the preservation of the Union during the Civil War.Trump’s decision to share the AI-generated image comes at a time when debates surrounding presidential legacy, historical symbolism and the use of artificial intelligence in political messaging are increasingly intersecting in American public life. While there is no official plan to alter the monument, the image once again placed Trump’s long-running Mount Rushmore ambition at the centre of political and cultural discussion.
