US President Donald Trump has yet to decide whether to move ahead with a deal to extend the ceasefire with Iran by another 60 days, during which both sides will work toward a permanent solution.
The US President held a Situation Room meeting to discuss extending the truce to give negotiators time to discuss Tehran’s nuclear programme. After the meeting, a White House official said, Trump will only accept a deal “that is good for America and satisfies his redlines. Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon,” the Associated Press reported.

Washington and Tehran differ on key issues
Trump said Tehran would have to end its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz and restore freedom of navigation in the crucial maritime route, following reports of Iran discussing toll collection along the strait with Oman.
The US President said that Tehran would have to provide assurances that it would not build a nuclear weapon. He added that the existing near-weapons-grade nuclear material would be “unearthed” by the US.
“Iran must agree that they will never have a Nuclear Weapon or Bomb. The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions,” Trump said.
Tehran has not agreed to these conditions. A senior Iranian official, speaking to Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, said the potential deal does not include any nuclear-related issues.
The country’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on state TV that the management of the strait must be decided by Iran and Oman.

Fars said the strait would be reopened under conditions set by Tehran after the US lifts its blockade on Iranian ships.

Iran’s main negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Friday that he has “no trust in guarantees or words,” only actions, underscoring lingering distrust after the US and Israel have twice attacked Iran over the past year while it was engaged in nuclear negotiations.
“No step will be taken before the other side acts,” Ghalibaf wrote on X. “We do not gain concessions through talks, but through missiles.”
