Iran US War LIVE: Tensions in the Persian Gulf have sharply escalated, with the world closely tracking a fast-moving crisis that could reshape global energy and security dynamics. On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil passes, has once again turned into an active conflict zone.

In the past 24 hours, naval clashes, missile exchanges, and reports of damaged vessels have pushed the US-Iran standoff dangerously close to a tipping point. Yet, even as tensions spike, the Pentagon is maintaining a calibrated stance, calling the situation “armed stability” rather than a full-scale war.

At the heart of the crisis is “Project Freedom,” Washington’s high-risk push to secure maritime routes without triggering a wider conflict. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth insists the fragile April 7 ceasefire still holds, despite repeated flare-ups. Meanwhile, the United States Central Command is coordinating efforts to escort stranded vessels to safety amid continued “below-threshold” attacks by Iranian forces.

Ceasefire on the brink

The truce is under strain as both sides accuse each other of violations. US forces report destroying Iranian fast-attack boats and intercepting missiles and drones during escort operations, while Tehran alleges civilian risks.

Key updates:

  • Naval clashes intensify across shipping lanes.
  • Over 1,500 vessels and 22,000 mariners remain stranded.
  • Global oil markets remain volatile amid disruption fears.
  • With neither side backing down, this is no longer just a regional flashpoint—it’s a high-stakes test of how far brinkmanship can go before spiralling into wider conflict.
