There is a name that quietly inspired a generation of budding entrepreneurs is Ram Chandra Agarwal. His is not just a story of success, but of resilience, positivity and undying optimism. Born into a humble middle-class family in 1965, Ram was struck by polio at the tender age of four, leaving the lower half of his body disabled. He has to get used to crutches for mobility. In a world where disability often translates into limited opportunity both physically and financially, Ram refused to give up or live an average life. This young man from Kolkata, with the support of his family, pursued higher education and completed his schooling and college from renowned institutions. From photocopy shop to garment businessRam has shared his entrepreneurial journey in many podcasts and interviews. He started his retail journey as soon as he finished his formal education. With modest investment, he opened a small photocopy shop, and operated it with optimism. However, he was not late to realise that by doing this, he can’t bring any significant change in his life or society. He knew from a young age that he was born to achieve big things in life.He soon switched his business to a garment store in Kolkata. For over a decade, he ran this clothing store. It was not an overnight success. He worked hard, non-stop and with dedication and discipline. He focused on understanding Indian consumers, fashion trends and inventories. In his interviews, he mentions how he was into fashion and understood clothes. He would go store to store to sell his clothes at cheap prices just to understand what worked in this industry. Those weren’t glamorous years of his life but was preparing himself to create something bigger.Birth of Vishal Mega MartBy the early 2000s, India’s retail landscape was evolving. And that’s when Ram sensed an opportunity, and relocated to Delhi to take a bold leap. In 2001, he launched the first Vishal Mega Mart store in Kolkata, which took middle-class consumers by storm. With a simple vision, the man created a value-driven, one-stop shopping destination.

The store soon became a hotspot where middle-class families could find quality essentials, apparel and groceries at pocket-friendly rates. The chain targeted tier II and tier III cities, focusing on middle-income consumers, an idea that quickly resonated with buyers. Soon the stores were launched in many other cities across India. The success was remarkable. At its peak, the chain had over 400 stores across cities. The story of success and turmoilBut they say success comes at its own challenges. Agarwal, in order to expand the business, took a heavy debt but unfortunately came the global financial crisis of 2008–09. It was the time of an economic crisis worldwide. His business was too impacted. The debt kept mounting and consumers kept shrinking. A time came when Ram had to make a hard choice. A business valued at an estimated ₹2,000 crore was sold for around ₹70 crore to Shriram Group and private equity companies in 2011. Though under new ownership, the Vishal brand lived on.But this did not stop or demotivate Ram.The comeback: V2 Retail

Agarwal made a comeback with a new venture in the form of V2 Retail Limited soon after. The first store was launched in Jamshedpur and it too quickly attracted consumers. V2 Retail grew exponentially, earning a turnover surpassing ₹100 crore within its first few years and over 150 stores across multiple Indian cities.By 2025, V2 Retail had emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing retail brands, with a market capitalisation exceeding ₹6,500 crore. Today, he is married and has two beautiful kids. He travels the world and never forgets to have fun, all because of his hard work. From crutches to retail king, Ram Chandra Agarwal’s journey is truly remarkable and inspiring.
